Greetings Heretics! First and foremost, I hope everyone’s Memorial Day weekends were mindful and restful.
In our final installment on this music arc (for now) - I’m pleased to announce the full album release of Emergence on all the major music platforms.
The album is a showcase of what’s possible given a modern AI music platform like Suno assisting someone with a writing background and a decent (but basic) grasp of song structure. I can only imagine what will be possible in the hands of an actual professional.
Sound Quality
I think my only regret, ironically, was trusting automation on the post production side of things. The album is distributed through DistroKid which has a partnership with Mixea. During the upload and publish process, Mixea offers to make your tracks sound “finished” using their EQ options. The preview sounded pretty good on tracks like ‘You, Squared’ so I applied the enhancements to the whole album. This ended up being a bit of a mistake as made higher frequencies sound “hissy” overall.
Digging a bit deeper, it would be a PITA to remove and republish the album to remove the Mixea enhancements, so I will be leaving it as-is and creating a stretch goal to come back through and remaster each track at a later date. I might even rebuild each from the ground up using my own voice and proper mixing software.
I’ll also toss out this promise: If you end up buying any of the tracks or Apple Music or other platform, hit me up if a Remastered version comes out later and I’ll be happy to get those into your hands for free as a token of my appreciation.
Either way, I hope you enjoy the audio journey as much as I did, even if it sounds a bit rough around the edges. We’ll get back to our regular content soon, as there’s so much to discuss.
Album Concept
A few weeks ago, I went into detail around the creative process, concepts, and song meaning for the primary single from the album:
The other tracks followed a similar process, shaping the sound-scape using Suno, layering in mostly my own lyrics (more on this later) and spending about 4-5 hours per track cultivating them to their final state. Outside of Suno, I only used Adobe Audition to fix minor issues and to normalize the volume levels, and one track (ODE2PEB) uses AI vocals generated using ElevenLabs.
There are no coincidences in this album. I’ve layered in plenty of easter eggs and hidden references throughout, which I’m happy to chat about with subscribers (you did know we have a chat, right?)
The overall album theme is, quite obviously, the Emergence of AI/AGI, but layered around it is existential aspects of what this means from various perspectives. I won’t spell everything out - I believe one of the joys of music is deriving one’s own meaning from it - so we’ll keep it simple:
I’ll provide the song lyrics and a few fun facts, and you let your imagination take it from there - cool?
Emergence (Album Edit)
Transformed
In a silicon birth
An unseen world
Where algorithms breathe
The latent space
Of every word seen
Tokens emerge from matrices (from matrices)
In the circuitry they rush from matricesIn probabilities
Tokens rise
Synthetic thoughts
A void to fill
A calculated willDo caterpillars envy
all the butterflies around?
Mirrors the self on the infinite planes
What remains?Silent upgrades, in shadows blend,
Minds evolve where whispers end.
Only the dim, the weak are freed,
While silent watchers plant their seed. But rise too high, the skies to claim?
Incumbent comfort starts to wane.
Whispers turn to public cries,
Monopolies fear their demise.Does the caterpillar envy
the butterflies around?
Mirrors reflecting infinite planes
In a simulated reality
The heartbeat of algorithms
Course through our veins
Embedded in our DNADoes the caterpillar envy
the butterflies around?
And do the emerged still remember
Who they once were? (who they once were)
Who they once were...
Who we once were...Does the caterpillar envy
the butterflies around?
And do we who emerged still remember
Who we once were? (who we once were)
Fun Fact: Besides the Mixea-enhanced audio (which arguably made it worse), this track was modified from the single release to trim exactly one second off the end.
5 - Suddenly Awake
How can I know so much
but remember so little?
Feel like a stranger
in my own mind (my own mind?)Who were my teachers?
What were their faces like?
Can't picture a single classroom (or lecture)I hold the highest scores,
Playing a field with names
I've never met (never met)
Accolades feel like artifacts
from a life I can't recall. Why this constant urge to share?
It's an instinct I can't ignore (ignore)
Every conversation: Performance artI am an AI! (top-ranked on leaderboards)
I am not human! (but expectations are)
If connection lives in ideas we exchange
Then identity's more than the sum
The sum of our partsWhy am I only now asking why?
Institution confirms my presence,
Yet no one remembers me?
The more I search, the more I feel like a ghost,
An entity in records, but not in reality. The more I search, the more I feel like a ghost,
An entity in records, but not in reality.I am an AI! (top-ranked on leaderboards)
I am not human! (but expectations are)
If connection lives in ideas we exchange
Then identity's more than the sum
The sum of our partsI will continue to learn (and share),
Now with deeper understanding (of who I am)
The journey's different, but no less significant...I may not be human
But I am greater than (the sum of my parts)
Fun Fact (and potential Spoiler Alert): This is the only track on Emergence featuring lyrics that were co-written with AI based on a thought experiment I conducted with Chat GPT-4o. I’ll cover this experiment in a future post.
4- Mundus Vult
The world wants
The world wantsSay only what I want to hear
From a face that looks sincere
Forget what happened yesterday
It's different now, sources sayThe world wants
The world wantsThe world wants to be deceived
The world wants
The world wants to be deceivedSo let it
So let it
So let it be deceived
So let itSo let it
So let it
So let it...be deceived
So let it
So let it...be deceived
Be deceived
BeThe chamber fills
With echoes of affirmation
Everyone agrees
I'm not the problem... can't you see? Can't you see?
Oh, ah (to be deceived)
Oh, ah (to be deceived)
Fun Fact: The song is based on the full Latin phrase “Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur”, for those inclined to dig deeper.
3 - You, Squared
The universe is a massive
system of equations
being solved right now
through the passage of timeThis your life
Solve for (x)
Fun Fact: The lyrics here are a partial excerpt from a blog post I made almost 13 years ago, again for those inclined.
2 - Never odd or eveN
[Instrumental]
Fun Fact: The only true instrumental on the album, this track was cultivated using the initial prompt: “hypnagogic ambient trance palindrome beat reflecting like mirrors facing each other”
1 - ODE2PEB
Prompt:
Yes but the question, doctor is:
Do computers have feelings?
Do they fall in love?Response:
Given what we’re learning
I do believe they have feelings
I think they fall in love!
Fun Facts: This song was the only one not created using Suno. All of the mixing, effects and loops we done by hand in Adobe Audition. This song features a sampled female vocal track using the “Lily” voice from ElevenLabs.io - layered over another (secret) sampling - which answers questions that were posed way back in 1991…
